About this episode
Your daily, no-nonsense rundown of the most consequential news shaping America—minus the fluff.

President Trump is now reconsidering an eleven-billion-dollar arms sale to Taiwan.
0:06
In yesterday's briefing, we noted the start of his summit with President Xi Jinping.
0:13
Today, we have the outcome.
0:15
This move comes after three days of talks in Beijing, where Xi explicitly warned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to conflict.
0:26
On his way home, Trump told reporters on Air Force One that Xi “does not want to see a fight for independence because that would be a very strong confrontation.” The reconsideration of a congressionally authorized arms package is the first tangible result of that warning.
0:48
Here are the day's essential headlines.
0:51
Number Two: The United States and China have announced what Xi Jinping is calling a “constructive strategic stable relationship.” He described Trump's trip as a “historic and landmark visit” that constitutes a “milestone event.” The White House has not used the same framing, but officials confirmed the two nations are discussing new mechanisms to fast-track Chinese investment deals in the U.S.

and to reduce tariffs on certain non-critical goods.
1:27
The choreography was warm, with Trump praising the roses in the Zhongnanhai leadership compound as “the most beautiful roses anyone has ever seen.” Number Three: As part of the talks, China agreed to purchase two hundred Boeing aircraft.
1:46
This is a significant order, but it falls short of the larger, more comprehensive trade deal some in the administration had been hoping for.
1:57
It’s a concrete outcome, but one that feels more like a standard diplomatic deliverable than a reset of the world's most important economic relationship.
2:09
Number Four: President Trump also claimed that China offered to help with the ongoing conflict with Iran.
2:18
Both leaders did agree on the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for global energy flow.
2:26
However, Beijing has not publicly confirmed any specific offer of assistance on Iran, leaving a gap between the President’s claim and China’s official position.
2:38
Number Five: While the President was negotiating in Beijing, Republicans in Washington were struggling with a problem at home: affordability.
2:50
A new CNN poll shows seventy-seven percent of voters blame the Trump administration's policies for rising prices.
2:59
The Republican-led Congress is now under intense pressure to show it has a plan to address economic discontent.
3:08
Number Six: The party’s legislative response is starting to take shape, and it’s already drawing criticism.
3:16
Key proposals include a temporary suspension of the federal gasoline tax and a controversial bill to increase funding for immigration enforcement.
3:28
Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri defended that bill directly, stating, “Mass deportations will lower the price of everything, especially housing.” Many in his own party, however, see these measures as insufficient to solve the core cost-of-living crisis.
3:48
Number Seven: That frustration is becoming public.
3:52
Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana put it bluntly: “The American people are crying out for us to address the cost of living...
4:02
All we’ve done since July is stand around sucking on our teeth.” And Pennsylvania Representative Brian Fitzpatrick added, “Half of this country lives paycheck to paycheck, and they see us focusing on crypto.” Number Eight: In a sharp turn from economic policy, President Trump announced plans to build a statue garden of “American Heroes” in West Potomac Park, near the National Mall in Washington D.C.
4:34
The project will be partly funded by forty million dollars appropriated in last year’s tax bill and will feature figures from Founding Fathers to athletes and entertainers.
4:48
Local residents have already raised concerns about the loss of public recreational space and softball fields.
4:57
Number Nine: Wall Street processed the news from China with caution.
5:02
The S-and-P 500 and the Nasdaq both closed down slightly on May fifteenth.
5:08
The modest drop was driven by rising bond yields and what traders are calling geopolitical uncertainty following the summit.
5:18
The new “constructive strategic stable relationship” has not yet translated into market confidence.
5:26
Number Ten: And yet, one company’s stock tells a different story.
5:31
While the broader market was hesitant, shares in Cisco Systems soared thirteen-point-four percent.
5:39
The company reported quarterly earnings of one dollar and six cents per share, a ten percent increase year-over-year.
5:48
The driver wasn't a new trade deal or a political announcement.
5:53
It was a surge in demand for its AI-powered networking equipment.
5:59
The summit produced a new name for the U.S.-China relationship.
6:04
Congress is debating how to manage the price of gasoline.
6:08
But the forces quietly reshaping the economy aren't waiting for a press conference.
6:15
They are being built in data centers and reflected not in polls, but in earnings reports.
6:22
One tells a story about power.
6:24
The other simply shows it.
