0:00 The U.S.0:00 national debt just crossed forty trillion dollars.0:03 In yesterday's briefing, we covered the day's headlines, but this is the number that redefines the entire landscape.0:09 It arrived on August eighteenth, pushing right up against the forty-one-point-one trillion dollar ceiling, and while the sky didn't fall, the price the U.S.0:18 pays to borrow money just hit five-point-three-four percent.0:21 That number changes the math on everything else.0:24 Here’s what else is moving.0:25 First, immigration policy is now creating major worker shortages.0:29 The Economist reports that sectors like construction and agriculture are getting hit hard, which is directly pushing up housing costs for you.0:37 Net migration to the U.S.0:38 has cratered—from two-point-seven million people in 2024 to just over three hundred thousand this year.0:44 Some estimates even show negative net migration.0:47 In the tech world, it’s a tale of two chipmakers.0:50 Nvidia’s problem is that it can’t make its GPUs fast enough.0:53 Supply chain bottlenecks are actually helping them, elongating their product cycle and pushing their free cash flow to forty-five-point-five billion dollars.1:02 Meanwhile, Micron Technology is getting squeezed.1:04 A Chinese memory chipmaker, CXMT, is expanding capacity at a terrifying rate, creating a massive long-term risk for Micron’s business.1:12 And while you're watching the big names, a company called Nebius Group just reported revenue growth of four hundred and fifty-four percent.1:20 That's not a typo.1:21 They're locking in major AI cloud contracts, giving them stunning visibility into their earnings for the next two years.1:27 Finally, a couple of quick hits.1:29 BAE Systems, the defense giant, just posted a record order backlog of eighty-four BILLION pounds and raised its guidance for the year.1:37 And with the November midterms approaching, the consensus is clear: expect some noise around healthcare policy, but don't expect the election to fundamentally change the country's economic path.1:48 The real power isn't in Congress—it's with the Federal Reserve.1:51 So let's go back to that forty trillion dollar number.1:54 For years, the Treasury stayed stable because, as one analyst put it, inflation was "quietly doing the heavy lifting." The government could spend, the debt could grow, and inflation would devalue that debt over time.2:06 It was a messy, unspoken arrangement.2:08 That arrangement is now OVER.2:10 Fed Chair Warsh’s recent speech at Jackson Hole signaled a hard, hawkish turn.2:14 He effectively ripped up the old playbook.2:17 Forward guidance is gone.2:18 That means long-term interest rates can finally reprice freely, without the Fed putting a thumb on the scale.2:24 And they are.2:25 That five-point-three-four percent yield on Treasury bonds isn't just a number; it's the sound of the market waking up to risk.2:32 The U.S.2:32 government now has to compete for funding in a way it hasn't had to for a very, very long time.2:38 Every new billion dollars of debt just got more expensive.2:41 Now, here's where it gets complicated.2:43 At the exact moment the country's finances are under immense pressure, the labor market is breaking in a way nobody predicted.2:50 The sharp drop in immigration isn't just a political headline; it's an economic crisis in slow motion.2:56 We are running out of workers.2:57 The construction industry can't find people to build homes, which is a direct line to the affordability crisis.3:04 Agriculture is facing the same squeeze.3:06 But here’s the turn.3:07 According to Moody's chief economist Mark Zandi, something flipped in October 2025.3:12 For the first time, the unemployment rate for foreign-born workers dropped BELOW the rate for native-born workers.3:18 Think about what that means.3:19 The very policies designed to protect American jobs have coincided with a reality where native-born workers are now more likely to be unemployed than their immigrant counterparts.3:29 The engine of labor growth has been throttled, and it's stalling out wages and creating these bizarre shortages.3:36 This isn't a political argument; it's just the data.3:39 You have a federal government facing a massive, increasingly expensive debt load, which requires economic growth to manage.3:45 But the primary source of labor force growth has been cut off at the knees.3:50 So you have two powerful forces pulling the economy in opposite directions.3:54 The fiscal reality of forty trillion dollars in debt demands more growth, more workers, more productivity.4:00 But the political reality of current immigration policy is delivering the exact opposite.4:05 Something has to give.4:06 This is the fundamental tension that will define the next eighteen months.4:10 It’s not about the midterms or the daily noise.4:13 It's about a country that has run out of easy money and is now running out of people.
