0:00 Oil prices jumped after-hours last night for one reason: Iran launched surprise attacks against U.S.0:06 troops in the Middle East.0:07 In our briefing yesterday, the focus was on domestic policy.0:11 As of this morning, that board has been completely FLIPPED.0:14 A lull in fighting that had sparked hope for a 10-day ceasefire is now completely off the table, jeopardizing any chance of new negotiations.0:23 Here's what else is moving.0:24 The U.S.0:25 national debt just hit its highest level ever.0:28 The new number is thirty-nine-point-five trillion dollars.0:31 That is not a typo.0:32 That breaks down to one hundred thirteen thousand dollars for every single person in the country.0:38 This comes after the debt increased by two-point-two-five trillion in just the last year, a direct contradiction of promises to bring it down.0:46 On Wall Street, investors are trying to price in the new geopolitical risk.0:51 Stock futures are basically flat this morning...0:54 but that calm is deceptive.0:55 The Dow is slipping as oil prices rise, while the Nasdaq is holding steady.1:00 Everyone is waiting for two things: the Federal Reserve's policy decision later today, and a new round of earnings from major AI players.1:08 It's not all bad news on the corporate front.1:11 Frontier Airlines just delivered record second-quarter revenue of one-point-three billion dollars.1:17 That's a thirty-eight percent jump year-over-year, significantly beating Wall Street estimates.1:23 It's a sign that consumer travel demand remains incredibly strong, despite economic headwinds.1:28 And for anyone watching the housing market, that pressure is getting heavier.1:33 Mortgage rates are up across the board ahead of the Fed's announcement.1:37 The national average for a 30-year fixed mortgage just ticked up to six-point-six-nine percent.1:43 Okay, let's go deeper on the two stories that define the landscape this morning: the attack from Iran and that staggering national debt figure.1:51 They are more connected than you think.1:54 First, Iran.1:54 The attacks weren't just random potshots.1:57 They were a deliberate message.1:59 For days, there was a quiet push for diplomacy, including a proposed 10-day ceasefire.2:04 But in parallel, Iran explicitly rejected a proposal from Oman to share control over the Strait of Hormuz.2:10 That strait is the chokepoint for a massive percentage of the world's oil supply.2:15 So when the attacks came, it wasn't just a military action.2:19 It was the punctuation on a diplomatic sentence.2:21 The sentence was "No." This isn't about posturing anymore.2:25 This is a direct challenge to the security of global energy flow, and the United States is the de facto guarantor of that security.2:33 The market's initial reaction—a spike in oil prices—is the first tremor of a potentially much larger economic earthquake.2:40 Now, let's turn back home, to that debt number.2:43 Thirty-nine-point-five trillion.2:45 It's a figure so large it almost loses meaning.2:48 So let's make it concrete.2:49 The promise was to lower, and even eliminate, the national debt.2:53 Instead, it grew by over two trillion dollars in a single year.2:57 That isn't a rounding error.2:59 It is a fundamental failure of fiscal policy.3:01 And it creates a profound vulnerability.3:04 A nation's financial strength is its strategic depth.3:07 It's what allows you to respond to crises, whether they are economic, natural, or military.3:12 When you owe that much money, your options narrow.3:15 Your ability to project power, to fund a defense apparatus, to stabilize the economy… it all gets constrained.3:22 Here's the thing.3:23 These two stories—a new, acute military threat overseas and a chronic, corrosive financial weakness at home—are now on a collision course.3:31 A country with unlimited financial resources can afford to meet a challenge like Iran's with overwhelming force and economic staying power.3:40 A country staring down a forty-trillion-dollar liability has to make much harder choices.3:45 Every dollar spent on interest payments for that debt is a dollar that cannot be spent on naval assets in the Persian Gulf.3:52 Every point the Fed might have to raise rates to combat inflation—inflation that the debt itself helps fuel—is another turn of the screw on the American economy, right when it needs to be at its most resilient.4:05 The fight isn't just in the Middle East anymore.4:08 It's on spreadsheets in the Treasury Department.4:11 It's in the calculus at the Federal Reserve.4:13 What changed today is that the bill for years of fiscal neglect is coming due at the exact moment a new military threat demands payment.4:21 The margin for error just vanished.
