0:00 president trump just signed an executive order renaming lake ontario to lake america yesterday in our look at america's pulse we tracked the 10 headlines that matter today that pulse is racing over a great lake escalating a trade conflict with canada already worth tens of billions of dollars here's what else is moving alphabet google's parent company just posted0:21 a 30% jump in operating income but its free cash flow has turned negative surging capital expenditures of $45,000,000,000 in a single quarter are burning cash faster than they can make it meanwhile the tariff war is now a legal war more than 2,000 us companies including costco and fedex are suing the government they want more than $130,000,000,000 in0:42 tariff refunds after a federal judge ruled against the administration's policy the us dollar is also flashing red down 9.4 over the last year this is happening despite strong economic growth and falling inflation investors see the fed holding rates steady and are betting that cheaper money is on the way that brings us to the ai spending boom analysts1:02 are now openly questioning if the massive capital outlays by companies like google are a bubble they're pointing to two hundred and fifty years of market history as a warning against irrational exuberance and the trade conflict isn't just with canada china just launched its own reciprocal investigations into us trade practices a direct response to america's use of section1:19 three zero one of the trade act in the health care sector unitedhealth group has just replaced its chief financial officer the move signals deep instability following the ceo's sudden exit last year and a share price that has fallen by more than 50% the broader economy is sending mixed signals us manufacturing activity just slumped to a nine month1:36 low but sectors like healthcare retail and hospitality all added jobs showing a clear divide in the country's economic performance one bright spot for energy is chevron the company just beat wall street profit estimates hitting record oil and gas production which offset the impact of weaker crude prices finally the federal reserve is holding interest rates at 3.5% even1:54 with some weak job numbers the central bank is signaling it plans for two rate cuts later this year which is fueling that weaker dollar okay let's go deeper on two of these stories first the renaming of lake ontario this is not just a headline it's a deliberate escalation in a trade war that's already hitting both sides of2:09 the border2:10 the executive order signed yesterday comes as the trump administration maintains 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum remember this is the policy that has over 2,000 american companies suing for their money back so the white house is now fighting a trade war against canada and a legal battle against its own domestic businesses interior secretary doug burgum said the2:31 new name lake america should reflect the greatness of the united states but for canada this is a direct affront prime minister mark carney was blunt he said and i'm quoting canadians also know that naming reality means calling it lake ontario then now and always this isn't a dispute that will be solved with rhetoric it's a symbolic act2:52 layered on top of a very real economic conflict the name on the map might be in dispute but the billions of dollars in tariffs are not now let's talk about alphabet because what's happening inside that company is a perfect microcosm of the biggest bet in the global economy right now the company reported $40,800,000,000 in operating income a3:13 fantastic number but here's the catch they spent $44,900,000,000 on capital expenditures new data centers new servers all for the ai arms race for the first time this spending binge pushed their free cash flow into the negative a company that was once the definition of a cash printing machine is now burning more than it brings in and this3:36 is just the beginning their contractual commitments for future spending now exceed $800,000,000,000 this is the high stakes gamble defining the entire market is this the necessary price to build the future of technology or is it a speculative bubble fueled by cheap money and hype that's about to pop analysts are pointing to history warning that every technological revolution3:59 has been followed by a painful bust the question you have to ask is whether the promised returns from ai will arrive before the bill for building it comes due for alphabet and for the entire market that follows its lead that is now the only question that matters in washington they're renaming a lake while a trade war burns4:18 in silicon valley they're reporting record income while cash flow turns negative the story is the same in both places the grand pronouncements are loud but the numbers on the balance sheet are telling a very different story
