0:00 In 2005, Dave Chappelle walked away from a contract for fifty million dollars.0:05 He just… left.0:06 Fifty million.0:07 I mean, we talked last week about Rick Moranis stepping away at the peak of his fame, but this was different.0:16 This wasn't a quiet exit.0:17 This was like setting off a bomb in the middle of pop culture and just walking out of the building.0:25 Exactly.0:25 Because Chappelle's Show wasn't just a hit, it was THE culture.0:30 For two seasons, it defined comedy.0:33 It defined how we talked about race.0:36 And then, poof.0:37 He was gone.0:38 And the story that got spun immediately was that he was crazy.0:42 That he’d lost his mind.0:44 But the truth is so much more profound.0:47 He was filming a sketch...0:49 I think it was one where he was a pixie who represented a racial stereotype...0:55 The "racial pixie" sketch, yeah.0:57 And he said he was on set, and a white crew member laughed.1:02 But he described the laughter as being… wrong.1:05 It wasn't laughing with him.1:07 It was laughing at the stereotype in a way that made his skin crawl.1:12 Ohhh, man.1:13 That’s a chilling moment.1:15 It's the moment the artist realizes the audience is consuming the art in the worst possible way.1:22 And that was it.1:23 That was the 'enough is enough' moment.1:26 He said he felt like he was being summoned by the devil.1:30 So he finished the week, got on a plane, and flew to South Africa.1:35 Didn't tell his wife, didn't tell his creative partner Neal Brennan.1:40 He just vanished.1:42 You know, it’s a classic pattern.1:44 It’s almost a Frankenstein story.1:47 You create this thing, this monster of a hit show, and it’s brilliant and it’s alive.1:53 But then it gets so big, so powerful, that it turns on you.1:57 It stops being yours.1:59 Right.1:59 The machine he built was starting to use him as fuel.2:03 And the fifty million dollars was the price of his silence, the price of him continuing to feed the machine.2:11 He said the money wasn't the issue.2:14 The issue was, what does that money make you do?2:18 So what he did wasn't crazy at all.2:20 It was, uh, maybe the sanest possible reaction to an insane situation.2:25 He chose himself over the character the world wanted him to be.2:30 And then for years, there was just… silence.2:33 Rumors.2:34 He’d pop up unannounced at a comedy club in Ohio, do a set, and disappear again.2:40 He was deconstructing the entire fame machine.2:43 He was finding his voice again, right?2:46 I mean, away from the writers' room, away from the network notes, away from the pressure of being "Dave Chappelle." He went back to the beginning.2:57 Just a man on a stage with a microphone.3:00 He had to.3:01 He said the show had put him in a "bad space." So when he did come back in a big way, with those massive Netflix specials, it was on his terms.3:12 COMPLETELY on his terms.3:13 And look at the result.3:15 He didn't come back to sketch comedy.3:18 He came back as a philosopher with punchlines.3:21 The comedy is darker, it's more complicated, it's...3:25 way more confrontational.3:27 He's not trying to make everyone comfortable anymore.3:31 No.3:31 He’s telling his story.3:33 He walked away from fifty million dollars from Comedy Central.3:38 He then went on to sign deals with Netflix reportedly worth hundreds of millions.3:44 But the money is almost beside the point.3:47 It is.3:47 Because the second time around, the money came with control.3:52 It came with freedom.3:53 He didn't just get rich again; he bought his soul back from the company store.3:59 That’s it.4:00 That's the whole story.4:02 He had this profound transformation in public.4:05 He showed everyone that walking away isn't always an ending.4:10 Sometimes, it’s the only way to truly begin.4:13 It makes you ask the question, you know?4:16 What's the price of your own integrity?4:19 Dave Chappelle found out his wasn't fifty million dollars.4:23 It was everything.
