0:00 On December 31st, 1995, Bill Watterson published his final comic strip.0:07 Wow.0:07 The end of Calvin and Hobbes.0:10 The end.0:11 And in last week's episode, we talked about people walking away at the absolute pinnacle, and Watterson… he might be the patron saint of that idea.0:26 He had the most popular comic in the world, running in over 2,400 newspapers, and he just… stopped.0:36 And not just stopped.0:39 He vanished.0:40 It’s not like he went on to do other public things.0:45 He just disappeared.0:47 Completely.0:48 And the reason why is a battle that defines his entire career.0:55 From almost day one, the pressure to merchandise Calvin and Hobbes was immense.1:03 Which seems normal, right?1:05 Every cartoon has toys, t-shirts, a TV show.1:10 It’s how you make the REAL money.1:13 Exactly.1:14 And his syndicate, the company that distributed the strip, saw a billion-dollar franchise.1:23 They saw plush Hobbes dolls, animated series, lunch boxes.1:29 And Watterson said no.1:32 To all of it.1:33 Wait—to everything?1:35 Why?1:35 That’s leaving a fortune on the table.1:39 It was a fortune.1:41 But for him, it was a fundamental violation of the art.1:47 His argument was that Calvin and Hobbes worked because it happened in this private, imaginative world.1:57 Hobbes was a stuffed tiger to everyone but Calvin, right?2:03 Right, to everyone else, he’s just a toy.2:07 So if you sell a mass-produced Hobbes doll, which Hobbes is that?2:14 You’ve destroyed the central magic of the strip.2:19 You’ve made the imaginary thing a cheap, physical commodity.2:25 He believed it would cheapen the comic, make it less special.2:31 So this is like a musician who refuses to let their song be in a car commercial.2:40 It’s that, but even deeper.2:42 It's like a musician refusing to release their song on anything but a special type of vinyl that can only be played in a dark room.2:56 He was protecting the very context of the work.3:01 He said, and I’m paraphrasing, that the comic strip is the art.3:07 The merchandise is just… selling out.3:11 He spent years fighting it.3:14 Years.3:14 That must have been exhausting.3:18 It broke him.3:19 He said the battle to protect the strip's integrity took all his energy.3:26 He felt he’d done everything he could do with the characters, and continuing would just be repetition.3:37 So he negotiated an exit.3:39 A final six months where he could draw whatever he wanted, full-page color strips on Sundays, and then… he would be done.3:52 Forever.3:53 And that led to that final strip.3:56 The fresh snow.3:58 "It's a magical world, Hobbes, ol' buddy…" "...Let's go exploring!" It’s the perfect ending.4:07 It’s hopeful, but it’s also a door closing.4:11 It’s him giving the characters back to the wild.4:16 Back to the imagination where they were born.4:21 And then he followed them.4:24 He moved to Ohio, he took up painting, and has given maybe two interviews in thirty years.4:33 So did it work?4:35 Did he find the quiet life he wanted?4:38 Yes and no.4:39 He found personal peace, absolutely.4:43 He got control back.4:45 But the paradox is that his refusal to be famous made him a legend.4:52 Salinger-level.4:54 His silence is so loud.4:56 People hunt for him, they speculate, they project all their ideas about artistic integrity onto him.5:06 So in trying to disappear, he became an even bigger myth.5:12 Precisely.5:13 He wanted the work to speak for itself, but his absence became a whole new story.5:22 He escaped the prison of celebrity, but he built himself a different kind of cage—the cage of being the man who walked away.5:34 Still, you have to admire it.5:37 He chose the art over the money.5:41 Every single time.5:42 He did.5:43 And maybe what he found wasn't anonymity at all.5:48 Maybe what he found was the one thing he was fighting for all along: a quiet space to create, on his own terms, with the magic still intact.
