0:00 In 1941, after a film called Two-Faced Woman was released, Greta Garbo called it "my grave." She was thirty-six years old.0:10 Wow.0:10 That's a final statement.0:12 It was.0:13 Last week we were talking about that 'enough is enough' moment, that line people cross when they walk away from everything.0:24 But Garbo...0:25 she didn't just walk away.0:27 She vanished.0:28 In plain sight.0:29 And she was, what, one of the biggest stars on the planet at that point?0:35 Not just a star, but an ICON.0:38 The biggest.0:39 She had creative control, demanded huge salaries.0:43 Her face was everywhere.0:45 Her style was copied by women around the world.0:49 And then, after twenty-four movies in sixteen years, she just… stopped.0:55 So what happened with that last film, with Two-Faced Woman?1:00 I mean, was it really that bad?1:03 The reviews were disastrous.1:05 MGM was trying to rebrand her, you know, turn this melancholic, European siren into a cheerful, "all-American" girl.1:15 She had to dance the rhumba.1:17 She hated it.1:19 She felt completely humiliated.1:21 Oh, I can see that.1:23 It's a total betrayal of the persona that made her famous in the first place.1:29 But one bad movie doesn't usually end a career like that.1:34 Right.1:35 And that’s the turn.1:37 It wasn't just the movie.1:39 It was 1941.1:40 World War Two had closed off the entire European market, which her films depended on.1:47 So you have this perfect storm of a critical failure and a market that just evaporated.1:54 The studio announced she was taking a "temporary" retirement.2:00 Uh-huh.2:00 A little break.2:01 Let things cool down.2:03 Except that temporary retirement lasted forty-nine years.2:08 Wait—forty-nine?2:10 As in… she never made another film?2:13 Never.2:13 She moved to New York City, into a seven-room apartment on East 52nd Street, and just disappeared.2:21 No more interviews.2:23 No autographs.2:24 No premieres.2:25 For almost half a century.2:28 That is… astounding.2:29 It reminds me of how artists today try to control their narrative, you know, through a locked-down Instagram or a carefully worded press release.2:42 But she did it with architecture.2:44 With a locked door.2:46 She just opted out of the entire system.2:50 Completely.2:50 She built a fortress of privacy.2:53 And the wild part is, it only amplified her mystique.2:58 The less she gave, the more the public wanted.3:02 They’d get these paparazzi shots of her, an older woman just walking the streets of Manhattan, but she never spoke.3:11 She became more famous for her silence than she ever was for her lines.3:18 So she just lived there, by herself, for all those years?3:22 Pretty much.3:23 She traveled with friends, she became a serious art collector—had Renoirs and everything—but her public life was over.3:33 She was offered huge roles, you know.3:37 They wanted her for Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard.3:41 Oh, wow.3:42 She would have been incredible.3:45 But she said no.3:46 Said no to everything.3:48 And for decades, no one really knew why.3:51 Everyone just speculated.3:53 But did she ever say?3:55 Did she ever give a reason?3:58 After all that time?3:59 Only once, really.4:01 Four years before she died in 1990, she finally told a biographer.4:06 It was so simple.4:08 She just said, "I was tired of Hollywood.4:11 I did not like my work.4:13 There were many days when I had to force myself to go to the studio." Then she said the line that gets me every time: "I really wanted to live another life." And so she did.4:28 It wasn't about the money or the fame.4:31 She just… wanted out.4:33 She chose the other life.4:35 The one on the other side of the screen.4:39 And maybe the greatest mystery she left us wasn't why she left, but what it must have felt like to finally be free.
