0:00 The United Naga Council has just deferred the release of fourteen Kuki hostages in Manipur.0:06 In yesterday's briefing, we committed to bringing you the day's most impactful national stories.0:13 Today, that commitment takes us to a region where a security crisis is worsening by the hour.0:20 The council is now demanding the release of six Naga civilians, who they say are being held by Kuki groups.0:28 Here are the other major developments we are tracking today.0:32 The Enforcement Directorate has begun an investigation into the Vedanta Group.0:38 The probe focuses on alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act.0:44 Specifically, officials are examining royalty payments made to its parent company, Vedanta Resources Limited.0:52 The company says it is extending full cooperation.0:56 India has strongly objected to a joint statement by Pakistan and the European Union that referenced Jammu and Kashmir.1:04 The Ministry of External Affairs categorically rejected the commentary, reiterating that the region is an integral part of India and no external entity has a right to comment on internal matters.1:19 In Punjab, the Trident Group is reconsidering a five thousand crore rupee investment plan.1:25 The decision comes after its chairman, Rajya Sabha MP Rajinder Gupta, switched from the Aam Aadmi Party to the BJP.1:34 Gupta cites geopolitical developments and rising input costs, but denies any link to his political move.1:42 The plan would have created an estimated ten thousand jobs.1:46 Implementation of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement has stalled.1:51 New steel safeguard measures and a carbon tax introduced by the United Kingdom are the primary cause.1:58 In response, India is now considering rolling back tariff concessions it planned to offer on products like Scotch whisky.2:07 And finally, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee is pushing for a meeting of the INDIA bloc around June eighth.2:16 The goal is to consolidate opposition unity against the BJP and to seek support against alleged post-poll attacks on her party's workers in West Bengal.2:27 Let's return to the two most significant stories of the day.2:31 First, the escalating crisis in Manipur.2:34 The United Naga Council’s decision to cancel the hostage release was not made in a vacuum.2:41 In a statement, the council cited the "prevailing sentiment of the Naga public." This follows a deadly ambush on May thirteenth that killed three church leaders.2:53 Both Naga and Kuki communities have since imposed economic blockades.2:58 They have blocked all vehicle movement on the national highway, choking off essential supplies.3:05 The situation is a dangerous cycle of retaliation.3:09 The fourteen Kuki hostages were to be a step toward de-escalation.3:13 Instead, the Naga council has issued a new demand: the release of six of their own people.3:20 The Chief Ministers of neighboring Meghalaya and Nagaland have both urged for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.3:30 But for now, the standoff continues, and the highway remains closed.3:35 Meanwhile, a major trade deal is now on uncertain ground.3:39 The India-UK Free Trade Agreement, which was negotiated over many months, has hit a significant roadblock.3:47 The problem began in London.3:49 The UK government has implemented new steel safeguard measures.3:54 Starting July first, steel imports will face a quota.3:58 Only sixty percent of imports will be tariff-free.4:01 Anything above that level will be hit with a fifty percent tariff.4:06 This directly impacts Indian steel exporters.4:09 In response, New Delhi is now preparing to rebalance the pact.4:14 The Commerce Ministry is actively considering withdrawing concessions it planned to offer the UK.4:21 The most prominent example is Scotch whisky.4:24 Reduced tariffs on whisky were meant to be a key benefit for the UK in this deal.4:30 Now, that benefit is at risk.4:32 Publicly, both sides are maintaining a positive front.4:36 Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal called his talks with his UK counterpart "great conversations." But behind the diplomatic language, the core of the agreement is being challenged.4:50 One country's domestic policy decision is threatening to unravel a landmark international trade deal.4:57 The day's events show a clear pattern.5:00 From local conflicts in Manipur to corporate boardrooms in Punjab, internal pressures are shaping external outcomes.5:08 The friction is not just at the borders, but within them.5:13 And that friction is now dictating the course of security, investment, and international trade.
