0:00 In 1833, Eugène François Vidocq founded the world's first known private detective agency.0:07 Last week, we unmasked Vidocq the state policeman, a master of disguise with a tangled legacy.0:16 But his dismissal from the Sûreté Nationale in 1832 wasn't an ending.0:22 It was a new, and far more dangerous, beginning.0:26 Imagine it.0:27 Paris, 1832.0:28 Vidocq, the man who practically invented modern policing, is suddenly out.0:35 Dismissed over whispers of a theft he supposedly orchestrated.0:40 The supreme irony.0:42 The doors to the Sûreté—the institution he built—are slammed shut.0:48 The organization is even being reformed to specifically exclude men with criminal records.0:56 Men EXACTLY like him.0:58 For a normal person, this would be ruin.1:01 But Vidocq was not a normal person.1:04 He didn't retreat.1:06 He did not go quietly.1:08 He went into business.1:10 He opened Le Bureau de Renseignements.1:13 The Office of Information.1:16 A polite, almost boring name for something utterly radical.1:21 It was a mixture of a detective agency and a private police force.1:27 And his employees?1:28 He hired about forty agents.1:31 Not former policemen.1:33 Former criminals.1:34 He staffed his agency with the very men he used to hunt, believing only a thief could truly understand how to catch one.1:45 They handled everything.1:47 Financial fraud, forgeries, burglaries.1:51 They found missing persons and investigated unfaithful spouses.1:56 At its peak, the Bureau saw over forty clients a day.2:01 And Vidocq brought his strange science to the streets.2:06 He made plaster-of-paris casts of footprints in the mud.2:11 He used early ballistics to trace a bullet.2:15 He kept meticulous index cards on every known criminal—their aliases, their habits, their methods.2:23 A paper brain for the Paris underworld.2:27 But the authorities saw something else.2:30 They saw a private army.2:32 A shadow police force run by an ex-convict, blurring the line between investigation and entrapment.2:41 And Vidocq—he danced on that line every single day.2:46 His success became his greatest liability.2:49 The Bureau was simply too good.2:52 Too efficient.2:53 He was becoming more effective than the official police.2:58 And the state does NOT tolerate rivals.3:02 The accusations began to mount.3:05 Abuse of power.3:06 Entrapment.3:07 That he was framing men to close cases.3:10 Lawsuits were filed.3:12 The Paris police, his old rivals, tried to have him expelled from the city itself.3:20 His creation was too powerful.3:22 It was too successful.3:24 And it had to be destroyed.3:27 They did suppress his agency.3:29 They shut him down.3:31 But they couldn't kill the idea.3:34 Vidocq had set the mold for what a private detective would become.3:40 He defended his work to the end, writing, "I have remained an honest man amid the darkness of perversion and the atmosphere of crime." Whether he was an honest man is a question for the ages.3:57 But he was a pioneer.3:58 He blurred the lines between lawman and lawbreaker so completely that a new profession was born in the shadows.4:08 He proved that sometimes, to find the truth, you have to be willing to get your hands very, very dirty.
