0:00 In 1834, a clerk in the French War Ministry was hopelessly in debt.0:05 The man who loaned him the money was the same man who would eventually expose him for selling state secrets.0:13 That man was Eugène Vidocq.0:15 Last week we explored the shadow and legend of Vidocq’s double life; now, in 1833, he was turning that double life into a business.0:26 After being pushed out as head of the Sûreté, the national police force he HIMSELF created, Vidocq didn't retire.0:35 He innovated.0:36 He founded Le bureau des renseignements — the Office of Information.0:41 It was the world's first private detective agency.0:45 And if you think that sounds like something from a novel, you’re right.0:51 Novelists like Balzac and Victor Hugo would base their characters directly on him.0:57 But the reality was messier, and far more audacious, than any fiction.1:03 His new office wasn't a government building.1:06 It was a private enterprise, and he ran it like a spymaster.1:11 Who did he hire?1:12 Ex-convicts.1:13 Thieves, forgers, and spies he’d once put away, now on his payroll.1:19 He believed only a criminal could truly understand how to catch one.1:24 His methods were revolutionary.1:26 He kept detailed files—a paper database of criminals, their habits, their associates.1:33 He pioneered forensics, using plaster casts of footprints and early forms of ballistics.1:40 He was a master of disguise, an artist of infiltration.1:44 So what kind of work did the world’s first P.I.1:48 take on?1:49 Everything.1:50 A merchant hires him to see if a business partner is committing fraud.1:55 A wealthy family wants to investigate a suitor.1:59 But Vidocq also played a darker, more dangerous game.2:03 He moved into national security, investigating espionage rings that threatened the state.2:10 And this is where the lines didn't just blur...2:14 they vanished.2:15 Remember that clerk from the War Ministry?2:18 Vidocq's agency loaned him money, knowing he was vulnerable.2:23 They created the leverage they needed.2:26 It was brilliant.2:27 It was also, to the official police, deeply unnerving.2:32 They saw him not as a partner, but as a rival.2:35 A poacher turned gamekeeper who had now, impossibly, decided to become a poacher again, but for a fee.2:43 The government that once employed him now saw him as a threat.2:48 They raided his office in 1837.2:51 They dragged him to court, charging him with corruption and the "pretension of public functions"—essentially, acting like he was the police.3:02 He was acquitted, but the message was clear: you are an outsider.3:07 So what does it all add up to?3:09 Where does this moment echo in our own time?3:13 This is the birth of the modern corporate intelligence industry.3:18 Think of a senior officer from the CIA or MI6 leaving the agency.3:23 They don’t just retire.3:25 They found a “global strategic advisory” firm in London or Washington.3:30 They use the skills the state taught them—surveillance, source handling, network analysis—for private clients.3:39 They are hired by corporations to investigate hostile takeovers, by oligarchs to track down assets, by governments who want plausible deniability.3:51 And their former colleagues in the official agencies watch them with a mixture of respect and deep suspicion.3:59 That is Vidocq.4:01 He was the original.4:02 But here is where the analogy breaks.4:05 The modern private spy has a legal framework to navigate, a century of precedent.4:11 Vidocq had NOTHING.4:13 There was no law for what he was doing because no one had ever done it.4:19 He was inventing the rules and breaking them in the same breath.4:24 The police weren't just suspicious; they were existentially threatened by the idea that justice could be a private commodity.4:34 Vidocq’s agency proved that information was power, and that power didn't have to belong to the state.4:42 He built a legend as a public hero, then risked it all to become a private force.4:48 He showed Paris, and the world, that the man in the shadows often sees the most.4:54 He proved that the most valuable skill wasn't just knowing secrets, but being the only one who knew how to get them.
