0:00 The timeline for AI that can improve itself just got shorter.0:04 Vals AI moved its forecast for full recursive self-improvement from August 2027 to July 2027.0:11 That’s the direct result of testing Anthropic's new Claude Opus 5.5.0:16 In our last briefing, we tracked the steady drumbeat of progress.0:21 Today, that beat just quickened.0:23 Here's what else is moving.0:25 The market is flooded with new models, all launched in the last four weeks.0:30 Google’s Gemini 4 Argon is now generally available.0:34 xAI launched Grok 4.7.0:36 Anthropic has Claude Sonnet 5.5.0:38 They all have massive context windows, but the real story is DeepSeek.0:43 On October seventeenth, they released V4.1-Flash.0:47 It supports a million tokens of context.0:50 The price is fifteen cents per million input tokens.0:54 That is not a typo.0:55 It’s also open-weights.0:57 At the same time, a company called Reflection just released Beam.1:02 It's a 501-billion parameter Mixture-of-Experts model.1:06 They trained it on ten-thousand-five-hundred Nvidia GB300 GPUs.1:10 And they released it under an Apache 2.0 license.1:14 That means unrestricted commercial use.1:17 A frontier-scale model is now a public utility.1:20 The money is following.1:22 BackOps, an AI supply chain company, just raised 42 million dollars in a Series B.1:28 That comes only six months after their 26-million-dollar Series A.1:33 The demand is clearly there.1:35 But that’s small compared to Ramp.1:37 The fintech company just raised one-point-eight-five BILLION dollars at a 60-billion-dollar valuation, citing its AI integration as the driver.1:48 And finally, the hardware is changing.1:51 A Chinese startup, StepFun, launched the STEPX Neo phone.1:55 This isn't just another phone with an AI app.1:58 The AI agent, named Amoo, is integrated at the operating system level.2:03 It runs on a 600-billion parameter model.2:06 The company’s own quote says it all: "In the agent era AI is no longer an add-on to a smartphone but the product itself." Let’s go deeper on two threads here.2:18 First, that acceleration.2:20 The Vals AI index moving its RSI forecast isn't just a number on a chart.2:25 It’s a signal that the feedback loop is closing.2:29 Claude Opus 5.5 outperformed a human baseline on the specific task of training a small language model.2:36 This is the mechanism.2:38 An AI that is better than a human at making another AI.2:42 Rayan Krishnan, the CEO of Vals, noted that Anthropic, the biggest advocate for pacing development, is still racing ahead.2:51 This is the context for Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark’s recent forecast.2:56 He projects AI could boost U.S.2:59 GDP from 30 trillion to 44 trillion dollars by 2030.3:02 A nearly 50 percent increase.3:05 Of course, that's an internal projection, it assumes a lot.3:09 But it shows you the scale of the ambition.3:12 It also explains his warning.3:14 He’s calling for urgent governance, for "unusual and serious rules" to manage the risks of biological and cyber weapons that this same technology unlocks.3:25 The capability and the risk are accelerating together.3:29 The second, and maybe more immediate shift, is commoditization.3:34 Let’s put DeepSeek’s pricing in perspective.3:37 To process ten million input tokens, Claude Sonnet 5.5 costs twenty dollars.3:43 Grok 4.7 is also twenty dollars.3:45 DeepSeek V4.1 is one dollar and fifty cents.3:49 That is not a price war.3:50 That is a market reset.3:52 It collapses the cost of experimentation and deployment for everyone.3:57 Combine that with Reflection's open-source Beam model.4:01 A half-trillion parameter model, free for commercial use.4:05 The tools that were exclusively held by a few frontier labs just six months ago are now available to any startup with the engineering talent to fine-tune them.4:17 This is the signal.4:18 The core technology is becoming a commodity, fast.4:22 But here’s the noise from the ground.4:25 For all the new benchmarks and speed increases, users are reporting that the models are getting less reliable.4:33 They fail to follow instructions.4:35 They don't maintain corrections.4:38 As one user on the OpenAI community forums put it, “We are getting faster tools that trip over themselves more efficiently.” That’s the disconnect.4:48 The benchmarks show progress.4:51 But practical utility is a different game.4:54 Ninety percent of U.S.4:55 working hours remain unbenchmarked.4:58 So we have two engines running at full throttle.5:01 One is building more powerful intelligence, faster than even optimistic forecasts predicted.5:08 The other is making that intelligence radically cheaper and more accessible to everyone.5:15 But the gap between the spec sheet and the real-world experience is widening.5:20 The landscape isn't just shifting because the models are getting better on paper.5:26 It's shifting because the cost of access, and the hidden cost of their failures, just dropped through the floor.
