0:00 In a single teaspoon of forest soil, there are MILES of tiny, invisible fungal threads.0:07 In our last journey, we felt the power beneath our feet with the roar of Krakatoa.0:14 But here, in the quiet woods, a different kind of power is at work… a secret one.0:21 You stand in an ancient forest.0:24 The air is cool and smells of damp earth and pine.0:29 Giant Douglas fir trees tower above you, their branches blocking out the sun.0:35 It feels… silent.0:37 But you are an explorer.0:39 And you know that silence is often a place where secrets hide.0:44 You are here to solve a puzzle.0:47 You see one tree that looks unwell, its needles drooping.0:52 But its neighbors, the healthy ponderosa pines nearby, seem to be on high alert.0:59 You can almost feel it.1:01 They are making special chemicals, defensive enzymes, to protect themselves from whatever is hurting the first tree.1:11 But how could they possibly know?1:14 They are feet apart.1:16 They have no eyes to see, no ears to hear.1:20 The wind is still.1:21 There must be another way.1:24 A hidden path.1:25 You kneel down.1:26 The forest floor is a soft carpet of fallen needles.1:31 You begin to dig, carefully, beside the roots of the sick tree.1:36 You follow a root as it snakes through the dark soil.1:41 And then… you see it.1:43 It’s a web.1:44 A network of threads so fine they look like spun moonlight.1:49 They glow with a soft, faint light.1:52 This is the mycorrhizal network.1:55 It’s not just connecting parts of one tree… it’s connecting this tree to the NEXT one.2:02 And the one after that.2:04 You have found the secret.2:07 This is the information highway of the forest.2:11 You realize what you’re seeing.2:14 The sick tree wasn’t suffering alone.2:17 It sent a distress signal—a chemical message—through this underground web.2:23 A warning.2:24 And the other trees RECEIVED it.2:27 They heard the silent alarm and prepared their defenses.2:32 This discovery was first made by a forest explorer just like you, Suzanne Simard, who proved this network was real.2:42 This isn’t just a warning system.2:45 It’s a marketplace.2:47 The trees make sugar from sunlight, and they send almost a third of it down to the fungi in the web.2:55 In exchange, the fungi gather minerals and water from the soil and send it back to the trees.3:04 It’s a partnership.3:05 You look around you, at the biggest, oldest trees.3:10 The “mother trees.” They are the hubs of this whole system.3:15 They are connected to hundreds of other trees, sending extra food and water through the web to the smallest, youngest saplings struggling for light in the deep shade.3:29 The forest isn’t a collection of lonely giants competing for survival.3:36 It’s a community.3:37 A family.3:38 All linked by a secret, living network that shares, warns, and supports.3:44 You stand up, the rich soil still on your hands.3:48 The forest doesn’t feel silent anymore.3:52 It feels like it’s humming with a deep and ancient conversation, happening just beneath your feet.
