0:00 In some parts of Chile’s Atacama Desert, rain has NEVER been recorded.0:06 Never?0:06 Not even a little bit?0:09 Not a single drop.0:10 It’s a world away from our bioluminescent adventure in the deep sea, isn't it?0:17 Last week we were surrounded by water and living light.0:22 Today… we’re in a world of blinding sun and almost NO water at all.0:29 Welcome to the great sand sea!0:31 Whoa.0:32 It’s… huge.0:33 And so quiet.0:34 All I can hear is the wind.0:36 And all I can feel is the heat!0:39 It’s like standing in front of an open oven.0:43 This is one of the biggest challenges for any desert explorer.0:49 The heat, and the thirst.0:51 How does anything live here?0:54 It looks so… empty.0:56 Empty?0:56 Oh, you’re not looking closely enough.1:00 The desert is full of secrets.1:02 You just have to know where to find them.1:06 See that lizard, scrambling over the rock?1:10 It’s a master of survival.1:12 It does a little dance, lifting its feet off the hot ground, one after the other, to keep from getting burned.1:23 It’s dancing to stay cool?1:25 That's funny!1:26 But what about plants?1:28 And look at that!1:30 It looks like a mountain… made of sand.1:33 That, my friend, is a sand dune.1:36 Some are taller than skyscrapers.1:39 But… how?1:40 How does a mountain of sand just… get here?1:44 The wind brought it.1:46 The wind?1:47 But it’s just air!1:48 Ah, but here, the wind is a sculptor!1:52 An artist!1:53 It’s the second great power of the desert, after the sun.1:58 It blows across the land and picks up a single, tiny grain of sand… like this one.2:05 Then it carries it a little way, and puts it down.2:10 Okay… Then it goes back and gets ANOTHER one.2:14 And another.2:15 And another.2:16 It does this millions, billions, trillions of times.2:21 Over hundreds, even thousands of years.2:25 Every grain joins the pile, and slowly, the dune begins to grow.2:31 So… the dune is MOVING?2:33 EXACTLY!2:33 It’s a slow-motion river of sand.2:36 The wind pushes the grains up one side, and they tumble down the other.2:43 The whole dune is creeping across the desert, inch by inch.2:48 It’s alive!2:49 Wow.2:50 I never thought of it like that.2:53 So the whole desert is always changing.2:56 Always.2:57 And the creatures that live here are just as amazing.3:02 Look… over there.3:03 See those tracks?3:05 They’re tiny!3:06 What made them?3:08 A Fennec fox.3:09 It hunts at night, when it’s cool.3:12 And see how big its ears are?3:15 Those aren’t just for listening.3:17 They’re like built-in air conditioners.3:21 Blood flows through them and the wind cools it down, which helps cool the whole fox.3:29 So everything out here has a trick.3:32 A secret for staying alive.3:34 Every single thing.3:36 From the cactus that stores water like a living barrel, to the beetle that collects morning dew on its own back.3:46 The desert doesn’t feel so empty now, does it?3:51 No.3:51 It feels… full of stories.3:53 Exactly.3:54 The desert isn’t a wasteland.3:57 It’s a kingdom, ruled by the sun and the wind.4:01 And its subjects are the most incredible survivors on Earth.
